Speaking to the elders (congregation leaders) as a fellow-elder, Peter instructs the elders to fulfill their primary task: shepherding the flock of God (1-2). He further describes shepherding as overseeing (2) and states three criteria by which proper overseeing is to be accomplished.
  1. Willingly, not by constraint
  2. Eagerly, not for wealth
  3. As examples, not as big shots
The reward for proper, godly shepherding is an unfading crown of glory straight from the hands of Jesus--the Great Shepherd.
