• This text is a graphic description of the final destruction by fire.
• There is a connection with creation.
• Slowness is irrelevant; time is noting. This gives pause to our being overly chronological, for example, about the "days" in Genesis. [Laura's comment: interpret the "days" in Genesis 1 in light of "and there was evening and there was morning." This is clearly chronological.]
• We do not know when he is coming--BE PREPARED.
• Peter returns to his discussion about the false prophets.
• The Paul reference included a warning about misinterpreting Scripture.
• In awe of: patience of God, the day comes as a thief, burning of the elements, and verse 17 ("You therefore, beloved, knowing this beforehand, take care that you are not carried away with the error of lawless people and lose your own stability.").
• Intimate connection between ethics and eschatology, godly behavior and end times.
• The entire book focuses heavily on the amazing power of God and his involvement in his creation and among his people--WOW.

• Peter does a lot of reminding here.
• 1:12-15 points back to the qualifications in 1:5-7, while 1:16-21 looks ahead to chapter 2.
  
• Peter mentions his death, but does not make a big deal of it. He knows it is coming, but he is not sorry. He is putting things in order. The nearness of death adds to the urgency of the letter.
• 1:16-21 shows that the NT, etc is not a conspiracy theory, but is based on eyewitness accounts.
• The prophetic word is a lamp. Lamps give much light, but when the sun rises, there is no comparison. Like the lamp is to the sun, so is the written Word to the kingly return of Messiah Jesus.
• Peter emphasizes real versus false prophets.
• 1:19-21 compares with 2 Timothy 3:16.
• In 1:11, we see that what God has given (1:3-4) and our participation (1:5-7) make for a rich entry into Jesus' Kingdom. It is in this light that Peter discusses the reliability of the apostolic word of the NT and the prophetic word of the OT. Further, these have been made more sure by sneak preview of the Transfiguration (1:16-18 with Matthew 17:1-8). Messiah's glorious, kingly return is certain and this returning Messiah has given us all things for life and godly behavior (1:3). In the meantime, the Word is our light in a dismal place (1:19).

• 1:5-7 is a framework for Christian life
• 1:5-7--Verse 5 lists "virtue," but aren't all these virtues? Laura's answer: The word translated "virtue" in the ESV is used to mean "moral excellence." This list is a virtue list and this particular virtue is moral excellence.
• 1:5-7--There is a connection to the TFB mission ("helping people become more fully devoted followers of Christ"). The repertoire of ministries at TFB should cover all the qualities listed in these verses. Dale Salico's article (July-August 2008 Transformations) on means and ends in ministry is relevant here.
• 1:5-9 The list of qualities and the "For" that follows are like chili. It's not chili until you have all the ingredients. You may make adjustments later, but you need the ingredients first.
  
• 1:8 the virtues in 5-7 are increasing, not merely existing
• 1:8 The qualities are not sequential but are possessed at once; the development is spiral
  
• 1:8--If the qualities are not in one's possession and increasing does that mean one is unfruitful and ineffective?
  
• 1:9 lack of qualities = useless
• 1:10 sure = building the qualities
• 1:10 election is a touchy issue, but it seems clear from this passage
